Go here: https://www.timbr.xxx and type in your bog name to make an online backup of your tumblr blog. I did and it’s already saved up to October 17, or so it says. I haven’t gone back all the way yet. (Some text is missing from some posts, but it has originals and reblogs.)

Update: It appears that it begins saving your blog with the most recent post and works backwards. It’s slow going! I just checked and mine is now
to 20 August, 2018.
Warning! When you go to the starting page to enter your blog name, you’ll see the most recently saved posts. I won’t say what I just saw, but… my eyes! My eyes! ;)
Thanks for this info!
The article contains a link describing how to backup your Tumblr blog to Wordpress.
It doesn’t actually have to be wordpress.com but can be any wordpress site, even a local installation.
This is quite a nice option, since their import tool will keep not only the images (as some other backups/rippers do), but also captions, tags and even the date information. Of course you loose the theme of your tumblr blog, but the idea is to backup the content.
I just used it to backup deliciousnights completely. First of all just as a local backup, but it can be easily made into a custom website, or again exported from.
